June 25, 2014–Take a Stand against Strife

(Be blessed by this DWOD for June 25, 2014 by guest contributor Gloria Copeland)

dam breachThe beginning of strife is as when water first trickles [from a crack in a dam]; therefore stop contention before it becomes worse and quarreling breaks out. (Proverbs 17:14)

Throughout the Scriptures, God warns us about the danger of strife. Yet, it’s still one of the most common problems among believers. We let it get into our homes, our work places, our churches…everywhere!

Of course, we don’t purposely let it in. We don’t wake up in the morning and say, “I think I’m going to stir up some major strife today.” We just inadvertently let it slip up on us one minor irritation at a time.

So, I urge you today to take a big stand against those little opportunities for strife. If you have a tendency to let things irritate you, decide to overcome that tendency. Arm yourself against them with the knowledge that this world isn’t perfect, that there are people in it that aren’t going to be nice to you. There are people who are going to stir you up and annoy you on purpose or by accident.

Make up your mind that, by the power of God, you’re not going to let them get your peace. That peace is so important to your well-being. It will keep your body healthy. It will keep your relationships healthy. It will put you in a place where God can guide your steps and save you from some very grave mistakes.

If you’ve spent a lifetime getting your feathers ruffled over every little thing, it may take a while for you to break that habit. You may have to work at it a moment at a time. But you can do it.

I know. I had to do that where worrying is concerned. I’d worried for so many years and had come from such a family of worriers that I did it almost without thinking. When I learned worrying went contrary to the Word of God, I had to give it up one minute at a time. With the help of the Holy Spirit, every time a worried thought would come to me, I would overcome it with the Word of God. And I did that until I broke that worrying habit for good.

You can do the same thing with strife. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you start to notice and overcome it one moment at a time. Then, every time you start to get upset about something, rebuke that strife in the Name of Jesus and resist it. Say right out loud, “I am walking in the peace of God today.”

You’ll be surprised how much more wonderful living can be.

June 23, 2014–Trusting God in the face of fear

Lydia and sons(Be blessed by this DWOD for June 23, 2014 by guest contributor Lydia Canning)

Numbers 13:26-14:38 tells us the story of the spies who went to check out the Promised Land. They saw giants living in the land. Most of the spies gave into fear when they saw the giants.

They decided that they could not conquer the land because the inhabitants were much bigger and stronger than them.  Those spies reported their findings to the other Israelites and convinced them to live in fear too.

Two of the spies saw things differently.  They saw how big and strong the giants were as well, but they knew their God was able to give His people what He promised them.  Unfortunately, the rest of the Israelites were not willing to step past their fears and follow God.

God had demonstrated His power to them in Egypt, but they still didn’t believe He was more powerful than the giants.  The people chose to stay in the wilderness and not take the Promised Land.

As a result, that generation died in the wilderness and never entered the Promised Land.  The two spies who trusted God were blessed and led the younger generation into the Promised Land 40 years later.

In the End Times, we will see the evil in this world get worse and God demonstrating His power over evil.  We have two choices.  We can live in fear or we can choose to trust God.

If we live in fear, we will miss out on experiencing the fullness of God’s promises for us.

If we choose to trust God, we will see God demonstrate His power in ways we have not experienced before.

The best way to get through the hard times is to get to know who God is and stay close to Him.  Life with Him is full of blessing.

June 19, 2014–Deceitful Desires

deceitful desires(Be blessed by this DWOD for June 19, 2014 by guest contributor Fabs Harford)

“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:22-24)

God reminded me through these verses that there is this ‘old-self’ I need to take off.  And I can tell when this pesky ‘old-self’ is running the show, because he is ruled by one thing: deceitful desires.

Desires aren’t wrong or bad, but ‘deceitful desires’ are a different animal.

What makes a desire deceitful is not about the object you desire.  It’s connected to the manner of your desire.

You are living in the ‘old-self’ when your desires testify lies about God.

Desire is deceitful when it promises deliverance in anyone or anything other than Christ.  Deceitful desires whisper His insufficientcy.  Deceitful desires tell you of His withholding or His absence altogether.

Examine your heart.

Are you driven today by deceitful desires?

Are you being moved to bitterness or frustration with someone because they are standing between you and the perfect peace you crave?  Your desire for peace is deceiving you.  Peace comes from Jesus, not the object you crave.

Are you angry or panicked because your co-workers disrespected you?  The acceptance you crave comes from God, not their respect.

Are you anxious and afraid because you have been convinced by your deceitful desires that the approval of people will justify you and make this world feel safe and okay?

The heart of your old self is fueled by the promise that possessing the thing you want will save you.

The good news is, you don’t have to figure out how to manage that deceitful desire.  You don’t have to figure out how to wrangle it.  You can just take it off.

In Christ–that old self has been crucified.  It is like Peter Pan and his shadow.  It’s been separated from you so that you can lay it aside without losing your identity at all.

Take it off.  Take off the old self with its deceitful desires that harden your heart and corrupt you.

Let your mind be renewed by the Spirit and put on the true self: the version of you that is fueled by a new heart.   A heart that is filled with desires for all kind of things: great and lofty things.  This version of you that is driven by stronger desires than your old self could ever imagine.

Live in the version of you whose heart has desires that tell the truth: all that you want and all that you need is Jesus.  Desires that testify that He is better. Desires that hunger for Him to be seen.  That crave Him above all.  Desires that demonstrate His trustworthiness and His Lordship.

This version of you is not someone you have to create.  This new-self has been made already; born in the blood and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Let that new-self win today.

June 18, 2014–Are You Easily Offended?

moyers(Guest contributor Mave Moyer brings us the DWOD for June 18, 2014…be blessed!)

Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense. (Proverbs 19:11 )

From time to time probably most of us find ourselves offended by something someone did or said. Maybe we were left out of a party that everyone else is going to. Or our co-worker gets praised in a meeting, but none of our efforts are even acknowledged or our opinions aren’t valued the way we think they should be. Our brother or our sister ticks us off. Our husband or our wife does or says something we don’t like.

Whatever it is, whoever it is, whatever expectation we put on others–as soon as it is not met–we can be offended if we choose to.

The Bible admonishes us to not be oversensitive. “Do not take to heart everything people say, lest you hear your servant cursing you. For many times, also, your own heart has known that even you have cursed others” (Ecclesiastes 7:21-22).

We must keep our flesh in submission to our spirit. Our flesh hates to be talked about, criticized, interrupted, told what to do, corrected.

1 Corinthians 13:5 tells us that a vital aspect of love is to not be “easily provoked” or “stirred to anger”. Those of us who love God’s law and understand His Word will not allow small irritants and annoyances to drive a wedge between us and others.

Proverbs 11:12 says: “He who is devoid of wisdom despises his neighbour, but a man of understanding holds his peace.”

Certainly, these verses are not telling us that we should never confront another person about a serious problem. For there may be a time when something happens that we will need to go to our brother, as we are commanded in Matthew 18:15-17.

However, confronting others should not be something we are doing on a regular basis. We don’t want to be the proverbial “contentious woman” (or man) who is just itching to be offended–all-too-ready to tell others off and put them in their place, while making them meet our unrealistic expectations…or else. No one wants to spend time around someone like that. It’s like living on egg shells.

Or maybe we aren’t “confrontational,” but we get just as offended, and rather than talking it out with the “offender,” we stew about what they said or did. We keep silent while harbouring all kinds of negative emotions that breed bitterness and hard heartedness that lead to unforgiveness and the holding of grudges.

Offenses are part of life and they are going to come our way. When they do, it’s fine to recognize that we are hurt, without getting upset about it. We can choose to not be offended, the same way we choose to be offended.

Colossians 3:13 says that we should be “bearing with one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.”

The best way to avoid being offended is getting our focus off “self”

Having hurt feelings and being easily offended is almost always a result of being too preoccupied with “self”. “No one likes me” “No one ever listens to me” “She was rude to me” “They hardly talked to me” “No one thanked me” “No one ever asks for my opinion” “She always interrupts me” “Nobody pays any attention to me” “They always treat me this way”

Me…me..me…O…my…my…my…LOL

In all honesty, if we are easily offended, we are usually over-sensitive about too many things, or we have a chip on our shoulders. And we can be quick to interpret even the most innocent comments or interruptions as an offense.

I have found personally that when I am easily offended, it’s not so much because of what was said or done to me, but because of inner, personal struggles that I really need to deal with.

Practicing the art of seeing the best in others, preferring one another and not thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought will certainly help us to put things in perspective when dealing with the offenses that come in everyday life.

We are all different and unique–with different personalities, different ways of thinking about things and perceiving things, different ways of looking at issues and dealing with things.

Not everyone is like us. And when we put unrealistic expectations on them, it’s wrong. We are not perfect and we can’t expect others to be perfect either.

Our accountability before God personally is to walk and talk in love.We are only responsible for ourselves, thank God! When it comes to others let’s give grace and space as we allow the Holy Spirit to deal with them…and with us!!

“Great peace have they which love Thy law; and nothing shall offend them.” (Psalm 119:165)

June 16, 2014–A Son Lives Completely Free

A son lives completely free(Be blessed by this DWOD for June 16, 2014 by guest contributor Barry Adams)

Now the Lord is the Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. (2 Corinthians 3:17)

The kingdom of God is all about living a free life. When Jesus announced His public ministry (Luke 4:18), He read from the Isaiah 61 passage of Scripture which starts off by saying: “The Spirit of the Lord Yahweh is on me; because Yahweh has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to those who are bound…”

Simply put, Jesus came to set us free. In John 8: 36, Jesus clearly states this when He said: “If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.” God loves freedom. Freedom of choice, freedom of expression, freedom to be who He created us to be.

It was our Father’s love of freedom that cost Him everything He had. In order for Adam and Eve to be truly free, they had to have the power to accept or reject the love that God offered them. There is no other way for love to operate. Love does not control, manipulate or oppress. To live in love means freedom to stay or freedom to leave.

Adam and Eve chose to go their own way which absolutely broke their Father’s heart and started a chain reaction in heaven that would cost the Godhead everything in order to redeem what was lost in the Garden. That is how important freedom is to God, for wherever He lives, there is complete freedom.

Anything that wars against freedom in our lives is something that we should take notice of. The spirit of religion moves in opposition to freedom. It sets rules and regulations, customs and traditions, applies pressure and guilt, all in order to keep people bound up… all in the name of God!

I am learning more and more how our Father hates captivity. He created everything to be free. Now just because we are free does not mean we abuse the trusted freedom that has been given to us as a gift. Galatians 5:13 tells us: “For you, brothers, were called for freedom. Only don’t use your freedom for gain to the flesh, but through love be servants to one another.”

If we truly live in love, there is no way that we will abuse our freedom. There will be many times in our life when we will lay down our rights in order to serve another. As a matter of fact, I believe the more that we are convinced that we are loved, the freer we will be to be the Lord’s bond servant. But it will be for love’s sake that we choose to lay down our life, not control, guilt or manipulation.

My prayer today is that each one of us would come into a deeper revelation of freedom than we have ever had before. My hope is that we would all be free from all of the ‘shoulds’ that would keep us in bondage in our life. May we all see that Jesus died on a cross so that we could live a free life. Free from sin, free from shame, free from condemnation…Free to be who He created us to be!

May the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation show us today the true heart of our heavenly Father so that we would know His love in its truest form. He doesn’t control us, manipulate us or abuse us. His love for us is so pure and so self-sacrificing, that we are free to come and free to go. Just as the loving father in the Prodigal Son story allowed his son to leave his house and take his inheritance with him, our Father entrusts us with the same choices.

May each one of us choose to live a free life and choose to live in love so that the love that God has for us might find its expression in servanthood beyond our wildest dreams, not because we have to, but simply because we choose to.

June 14, 2014–Living Memorials

Peggy-Kennedy(Be blessed by this DWOD for June 14, 2014 by guest contributor Peggy Kennedy)

“I am anointed with fresh oil. The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree…planted in the house of the Lord…growing in grace…They are living memorials to show that the Lord is upright and faithful to His promises…” (Psalm 92:10-15 Amplified Bible)

I love how the Lord speaks! I was waiting in line to receive ministry. As the speaker approached he spoke one word over me: “fresh”! And, enclosed in that one word was indeed a message from the Lord. I was thus directed to Psalm 92:10.

‘Anointed with fresh oil’ had a definite appeal to me. But there was more—much more! As the psalm rolls out there is more than encouragement. There is a clear statement of the contrast between the seeming “flourishing” of evil and the sure and ultimate flourishing of the people of the Lord!

The media reports and even circumstances of our personal arena can seem to indicate otherwise. However, this psalm states again that because of Who our God is, the measurement of “flourishing” is lifted to the eternal perspective.

What a picture: the “flourishing” of evil is presented as “springing up as grass”. Wonderfully, the “flourishing” of the righteous is described as the palm tree or cedar of Lebanon.

There’s a huge difference between “grass” and the palm tree or cedar tree! For these the Amplified version uses very appealing adjectives: long-lived, stately, upright, useful and fruitful, majestic, stable, durable and incorruptible. (vs. 12) I am definitely signing up for that list!

But the Lord had even more to say to me. The “flourishing” of those planted in the house of the Lord means they will be growing in grace and have ongoing fruitfulness. Each season will be marked by fruit-bearing and spiritual vitality, trust, love and contentment. What a glorious contrast to the lies of the enemy that are marketed among people of all ages!

The psalm crescendos by describing these flourishing, fruit-bearing believers as “living memorials”! The message flowing from our lives gives constant testimony to Who our God is! He is faithful to His promises. He is my rock. He is uncompromisingly pure and righteous.

If the enemy has been whispering (or shouting) lies into your heart about anything other than who you really are and Who your God really is, you can rise up today with authority and choose to contradict those lies! Our God is alive and well and His principles of life and living really give us the advantage now and the eternal edge.

“Lord, thank you that I am flourishing and fruitful. Thank you that I am growing in grace and have a deep-settled contentment. I deny room to the “weeds and seeds” of the lies of the enemy. I don’t just have memories of fruitfulness in a previous season but I am a living memorial with a keen expectation–a LIVING MEMORIAL to Your amazing and ongoing faithfulness to Your promises.” Amen!

June 13, 2014–You ARE a Leader

Leading a school of fish(Be blessed by this DWOD for June 13, 2014 by guest contributor Lance Wallnau)

You may not know it but YOU are a leader!

D.L Moody made it his mission to answer a challenge he heard while just a young shoe salesman: “The world has yet to see what God can do through a man who is fully devoted to Him.” He went on to being the most dangerous shoe salesman in Boston…and a revivalist.

Time and again, heaven takes hold of the earnest underdog who is pressing on to be the best he or she can be. Did you know Joyce Meyers started out as a church secretary? I told you D.L. Moody was a shoe salesman. Smith Wigglesworth, a plummer.

Often, such ones become promoted over those with greater gifting. God sees something in them. They are becoming His Word made flesh. They get it into their heart and mind. When that happens, you become explosive. Don’t neglect the building up of your mind and inner man. Now, more than ever, we need leaders that are:

  1. Lovers in their quest for Jesus, worship intimately (bridal)
  2. Warriors in their unwavering courage to dismantle the gates of hell. By this I mean they know how to pray strong.
  3. Know how to be statesmen and what battles to fight. They know when and how to speak! When they speak, they do so with arguments of the spirit that the enemy cannot stop.

Here are some thoughts from my friend Rick Renner:

The Bible is full of people no different than you or me…who heard a word from God, responded in faith, came into divine alignment with what God said, and ultimately saw His word to them fulfilled in their lives. And because of these people’s commitment to believe and to possess what God had promised, they changed history!

I believe as you become true to the voice inside you, YOU will lead the school! (fish or people!)

June 10, 2014–Considered the Cost of Broken Covenants?

Os Hillman 2014(Be blessed by this DWOD for June 10, 2014 by guest contributor Os Hillman)

“During the reign of David, there was a famine for three successive years; so David sought the face of the Lord.” (2 Samuel 21:1a)

There was a famine in the land, and David equated that famine to the blessing or lack of blessing from God. He sought God to know why there was a famine.

The Lord did not take long to answer: “It is on account of Saul and his blood-stained house; it is because he put the Gibeonites to death” (2 Sam. 21:1b). Many years earlier, when Joshua entered the Promised Land, the Israelites were tricked by the Gibeonites into believing they were travelers when they were actually enemies of Israel. The Gibeonites tricked Israel into making a peace treaty with them. It was one of the first major mistakes Israel made after entering the Promised Land.

As a result of the peace treaty, the Gibeonites were kept as slaves to Israel. This was never God’s intention for Israel. He had wanted Israel to destroy all their enemies, but they made an error in judgment that required that they honor a covenant with the Gibeonites.

Saul made a decision to disregard this covenant with the Gibeonites and sought to annihilate them. David sensed there was something preventing God’s blessing on Israel. As a nation they had violated a covenant made before God. Now they were reaping the consequences.

There are two things we can learn from this story.

First, when we make a covenant, God expects us to fulfill it. God is a covenant maker. He made one with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He made one with each of us through Jesus Christ. The Scriptures are numerous regarding the importance of honouring our commitments.

Second, God is a very longsuffering God. He gave Israel many years of grace before He exercised judgment for their sin. However, there always comes a day when God must uphold His standard of righteousness.

Are you failing to walk in God’s blessing due to some failed commitment? Calamities can befall us for many reasons; sin can be one of them.

In the case of Israel, David had to make things right with the Gibeonites. When he did this, God removed the famine, and Israel again was prosperous.

When you feel you lack God’s blessing on your life, ask the Lord if there are any broken covenants in your past—personally as well as generationally. Repent of them. Ask and receive forgiveness. Restore the broken relationships. Make restitution where needed. God may well be waiting on you before He can release His blessing on your life.

June 07, 2014–Break Through The Wall

break through the wall(Be blessed by this DWOD for June 07, 2014 by guest contributor Kenneth Copeland)

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)

You’re running the race set before you, moving full speed ahead with God’s blessing overtaking you at every step. Then suddenly, wham! You hit the wall. It may be a wall of sickness or financial trouble, of spiritual failure or family problems. But, regardless of the form it takes, the effect of “the wall” is always the same. It stops you cold.

The question is, once you hit a wall like that, what will you do? You’ll be tempted to quit, to turn back in defeat. But don’t do it. Because God will enable you to break through that wall and keep right on going.

I’m not going to tell you it’s easy. The truth is, it’s tough. But you have to push on through the tough times if you’re ever going to have a breakthrough.

Ask any athlete. He’ll tell you that! Because if he’s a winner, he’s been there. He’s pushed his body to what seems to be the maximum. His side has hurt. His lungs have ached. He’s had cramps in his legs and thighs. And just when he felt like he couldn’t go on, he’s heard some coach yell, “Come on! Move it!”

Athletes call that “hitting the wall.” It’s a time when the body says, “That’s it. That’s all I can do. I can’t go any further. I can’t go any faster. I quit.”

But the seasoned athlete knows that “the wall” isn’t the end. It’s a signal that he’s on the verge of a breakthrough. If he’ll toughen up and push himself a little more, he’ll get a second wind. Suddenly, he’ll go faster than before. He’ll reach a level of excellence he couldn’t have reached any other way.

When you feel the worst, when failure is breathing down your neck, press into the Word as never before. You may meditate on a particular scripture for days and even weeks sometimes, trying to get a revelation of it, seemingly without success.

Then suddenly, like the dawn of the morning, light will come pouring in. You’ll see the way to break through. All you have to do is punch one little hole in that wall of problems, dig one tiny hole in it with your faith and with the Word of God.

Then keep tearing away at that hole. Don’t quit! And, before long, the forces of God will come bursting through, demolishing every obstacle in their path!

Once that happens you’ll never be the same again. You’ll be hooked. It will only take one breakthrough like that to make a never-dying, never-quitting champion out of you.

June 05, 2014–Bringing out the Lion in You

lion of Juday(Be blessed by this DWOD for June 05, 2014 by guest contributor, Shyju Matthew)

How often have you felt like a tiny mouse? Small, insignificant and easily crushed in an instant by anyone at all.

How often do we feel absolutely insecure, defeated and discouraged?

Well, I’ll answer that for you. As often as we have forgotten that we have the Lion of Judah living in us.

And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that He can open the scroll and its seven seals.” (Revelation 5:5)

The king of the jungle fears no one in the forest. He roars with all his might and lives without worries to his full potential! What stops us from bringing out that potential from within knowing that a lion, actually the Lion of Judah, lives within us?

Here are three areas that you need to be aware of:

1. Your Past:

Nothing makes you feel more like a squeaky mouse than a broken past. Fear of the past is paralyzing. Nothing shakes your confidence than your knowledge of your past failures. The Lion of Judah in you is not bound by your broken past

Wish to rise up like a lion? Shake off your past. Rise up to your majestic call right this moment! To let go of your past is a choice, so start immediately! Don’t look back. Don’t dwell on it anymore!

Don’t waste your tears on what happened yesterday. Trust God more than ever now.

2. Your Present:

Your present situation is a reflection of your weakness. Your inability. Your insufficiency.

It is also a reflection of your need for Christ. Your weakness is a weapon to derive strength from being dependent on Christ!

Pray like everything depended on your prayer and work like everything depended on your work! One who is more concerned about being in the will of God will be less anxious about the results thereof!

Nothing moves the Lion of Judah than a believer who is totally surrendered, dependent and committed to Him!

3. Your Future:

The fear of tomorrow questions what you are supposed to do. It makes you worry about how you are going to do it. Anxieties are traps designed by the enemy to cage you in your future.

Mary asked the angel, “How will this be as I am a virgin and know no man?” The question probed the process into her destiny. However, Zacharias who was promised a son too asked from his doubt, “How will this be since my wife is barren?” And the angel had to seal his mouth shut.

Eliminate doubt in your curiosity about tomorrow. Ask God how it must be done for you to be available for His strategy. But don’t worry about how God is going to make things happen.

Trust God with your tomorrow. He has already seen it and it is very good!

Here are the lyrics from Newsboys’ song, “God’s not dead!” This is worth shouting and singing about!

“Let love explode and bring the dead to life

A love so bold to see a revolution somehow

Now I’m lost in Your freedom

In this world I’ll overcome

Let hope arise and make the darkness hide

My faith is dead I need resurrection somehow

Let heaven roar

And fire fall

Come shake the ground

With the sound

Of revival

My God’s not dead

He’s surely alive

He’s living on the inside

Roaring like a lion

He’s roaring, He’s roaring, He’s roaring like a lion!”

(Born in India and presently living in Montreal, Canada, Revivalist Shyju Matthew continues to demonstrate God’s mighty Word through the manifest presence of the Holy Spirit in crusades and conferences all over the world. This post first appeared on his blog Guarding The Heart)
